Description: Just days after the U.S. requests additional support from allied forces, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announces a plan to expand the role of the Canadian military in the Gulf War. A squadron of CF-18s will be placed on active duty in the Persian Gulf, providing air cover for Canadian ships and other coalition forces.

Description: A report from October 1990 on the HMCS Terra Nova, a Canadian warship stationed in the Persian Gulf. As part of the Canadian contingent participating in the Gulf War, the Terra Nova is enforcing the UN sanctioned blockade against Iraq. The ship has not been engaged in any major conflicts yet, but could be called into battle at a moment's notice. Canadian soldiers are kept busy rehearsing tactical and rescue procedures, exercising, reading, and writing letters to loved ones back home.

Description: The Canadian Navy is sending two destroyers, a supply ship, and 800 sailors to the Arabian Sea area in the Persian Gulf. They will be joining American-led forces in an attempt to stop Saddam Hussein. This will be the first time since the Korean War, aside from peacekeeping duties, that Canadian forces are headed into potential conflict.

Description: At the dawn of the Cold War, Somalia had aligned itself with the Soviet Union; when this alliance dissolved, the United States forged a coalition with the African country. As the Cold War thawed, however, the partnership weakened and the U.S. withdrew. As infrastructure and order collapsed, famine spread through the country. When the 900 Canadian soldiers landed in Somalia on December 15, 1992, they tried to draw order from the chaos with Operation Deliverance.
